That movie Slaps…..

I was reminded this morning that no matter how many different colored frames I sport with my multiple collection of bow ties that I am not as hip as I once thought I was. In conversation with some student veterans this morning the movie Dune was being discussed while I was drawing a fresh cup of joe at the Keurig and the comment not directed toward me was made, “Oh Dune slaps man”, my unrequited reply, “Oh, I really like that movie”. An eruption of laughter filled the room and I was totally not tracking. I turned around to see what was so funny and realized it was me! At that very moment it dawned on me that I am no longer really “with it”. The word slaps for those of you reading this that didn’t have to endure the moment like I did is this: Slap is slang verb meaning “to be excellent or amazing.” An example from the urban dictionary states:

Person 1: *plays song*
Person 1: “Wow, isn’t that heart filled?”
Person 2: “Yea bro, that slaps.”

As I sneak up on 50 this year (April is the month!) I have enjoyed looking back over this “half” of my life and as I continue this wonderful journey of life I appreciate more and more the small changes. The changes in technology, that are awe inspiring if you really think about how far we have come in the last half century. The changes in fashion, movies, video games, and especially the incremental changes in our language. I am not by any means antiquated in my use of the English language and in fact I like to think at times that I am a bit of a wordsmith or at least I thought so until today. But that’s okay. I am embracing my self at present. The flaws, the scars, the good the bad and the ugly. Its okay to get older I guess. Its okay to fall a little out of fashion, to be a little slower and to be slightly embarrassed by your lack of knowing. It all comes with the journey. It is life, and dude, life really slaps bro.
